This year marks 50 years since Sir Alister Hardy founded the Religious Experience Research Unit at Manchester College, Oxford in 1969.

The celebrations of this key moment started with a lecture by Rupert Sheldrake who gave the very first lecture at Members’ Day many years ago.

Hardy family members, including his grandson Dr Tom Farley and his great niece Jane Winship, spoke about the personal side of Hardy’s life and showed rare family photos from their own collections. In addition, Dr Mark Fox spoke about using the archive in his research, whilst former RERC Director Peggy Morgan and current Director Prof Bettina Schmidt spoke about their own involvement with the archive, AH Society and Trust.

Prof Ursula King spoke about Hardy’s influence on her own research and work and finally the current Chair of Trustees, Prof Leslie Francis looked to the future and the next fifty years.

A reception rounded off the day which was very well attended and supported with the help of Oxford Group members and others who willingly assisted with the book stall, admission and teas and coffees.

With thanks to all those who attended and helped make this day a success.

The second series (numbers 1-49) and the third series (numbers 1-3) of Occasional Papers are now available to everyone via the UWTSD RERC website!

It will still be possible to buy hardcopies of the papers, but in order to make them widely available they can be downloaded for free from the RERC website. This way we hope to increase the interest in religious experience, Alister Hardy and RERC.

The Occasional Papers can be found on the RERC (UWTSD) website at http://uwtsd.ac.uk/library/alister-hardy-religious-experience-research-centre/occasional-papers/

Two RERCs: UWTSD & University of Glyndŵr

As a result of changes which took place in 2013, we now have two Religious Experience Research Centres.

On July 4th 2014 the RERC at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) was re-launched with a conference organised by Prof. Bettina Schmidt on The Study of Religious Experience. A warm welcome was extended to an audience of about 70 people, which included several Trustees and many local members and folk associated with the AHSSSE. The aim of the day was to highlight different academic approaches to the study of religious experience: anthropological, theological, historical and religious studies. The first annual Alister Hardy Lecture on How to Study Religious Experience: Methodological Reflections on the Study of the Afterlife was given by Dr Fiona Bowie of King’s College, London.

More information about the RERC (UWTSD) can be found at http://uwtsd.ac.uk/library/alister-hardy-religious-experience-research-centre/

The second RERC has been set up at the University of Glyndŵr in Wrexham with the Director Prof. Chris Lewis, who gave the Alister Hardy Memorial Lecture on Open Day.

The Alister Hardy Religious Experience Research Centre was established at Glyndŵr University in November 2013. This Centre is located in the Department of Psychology within the Institute for Health, Medical Sciences and Society. The Director has concentrated on three areas of development during this 6-month period, concerning staffing, website development, and dissemination. The Centre is pleased to announce that Prof. Jeff Astley will shortly take up his Professorial position. The position is for one-day a week for two-years and has been funded by the Trust. The Centre has now also established a website. At present the site mirrors much of the material currently contained on the UWTSD website. Over time this Centre’s website will host unique material pertinent to it’s activities. The website can be found at www.glyndwr.ac.uk/en/OurResearch/Researchcentres/AlisterHardyReligiousExperienceResearchCentre/
